Phoenix (pseudonym) is a researcher in western Russia, a region which suffered after the accident at Chernobyl. She discovered that earthworms clean soil that is contaminated by radioactivity. This happens through their action of aerating the soil, which allows radioactive particles to descend with the action of rainwater. Also, the worms can safely absorb these substances; worms have been on Earth since the times when radioactivity was naturally stronger. The worms deposit the radioactive substances lower in the soil, leaving a depth of 50cm of soil that is decontaminated, where vegetables can be grown that are safe to eat. The author and her active group create rehabilitation centres for young people who come to pass 'health vacations'.
